Educational inequality and illiteracy have been identified as the reason for the current spate of terrorism in Northern Nigeria.

Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, made the submission on Monday while speaking at the 2nd Progressive Governors Lecture Series with the theme ”Crisis in the education sectors” held at Africa Hall, Government House, Kano.

Amechi warned that uneducated youths were a time bomb that represents a real threat to Nigeria. He said Nigeria needed N22 billion annually for the procurement of 200,000 books for its 1.2 million classrooms and 70,000 schools but spent just over 10 per cent of budgetary allocations to education on capital expenditure. Amechi therefore called on increased government spending on education.

The governor also condemned the establishedalmajirieducation system practiced by many Muslims in the North, saying it negatively impacts the psychology of children.

Also speaking at the occasion, former military head of State and APC chieftain, Muhammadu Buhari and former former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, both agreed that Nigeria needs to address the need for education if peace and security must be achieved
